Vintage Wooden Reversi Othello Travel Board Game Sheesham Wood Made in India

Description
Cultural & Historical Significance
This beautifully realized travel board game is an authentic product of India’s legendary woodworking heritage, specifically tracing its lineage to traditional artisan wood-turning hubs like Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. For centuries, multi-generational families of Indian craftsmen (kaorigars) have been globally celebrated for transforming native tropical hardwoods into intricate mathematical puzzles, chess sets, and abstract strategy games.
While the 8×8 grid matrix configuration famously mirrors ancient Indian precursors like Ashtapada and Chaturanga (the structural ancestors of modern Chess), this specific layout is designed for the internationally beloved tactical game of Reversi or Othello. During the late 20th century, Indian artisan cooperatives experienced a significant renaissance by partnering with international fair-trade organizations. They adapted their world-class carving skills to produce high-end, self-contained travel editions of classic board games. These items became prestigious executive desk accessories and coveted pieces of functional home decor across the globe.
Aesthetic Attributes & Craftsmanship
The game set is meticulously handcrafted from premium Sheesham wood (Indian Rosewood), a dense timber revered for its extreme durability and highly expressive, contrasting dark-and-light grain patterns.
The Playing Surface: Features an expertly incised 8×8 grid containing 64 precise peg repositories. The absolute center 2×2 matrix is highlighted with a striking inset green field, demarcating the traditional starting zone for piece alignment.
The Game Pieces: Comes complete with a full complement of hand-turned cylindrical wooden pegs, split evenly with vibrant lacquered orange and deep midnight-black focal tops to represent the opposing forces.
The Slipcase Storage Box: The game board functions seamlessly as a self-contained unit, accompanied by a heavy, solid wood slide-on protective lid that showcases the sweeping, undulating natural luster of the Rosewood grain.
