Overview
A hinged wooden box covered in bovine bone inlay, with a repeating lattice of elongated hexagons and small diamonds across the lid, front, back and sides. The dark ground between the bone pieces gives a strong cream-and-brown contrast, and a wavy band runs around the edge of the lid. Inside, the box is plain wood with a reddish-brown stain. It opens on two small hinges, has a small metal catch at the front, and stands on four small wooden feet. It suits a dresser, vanity, desk or shelf, and is a good size for rings, earrings and small keepsakes.
Background
Bone-inlay boxes like this are a long-standing decorative craft in India, where thin pieces of bovine bone are cut and fitted by hand over a wooden body, with a dark filled ground between them. This box is unmarked. The bone shows its natural grain and small pores, with slight variation in tone from piece to piece.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with no structural damage. The hinges and front catch are in place and the inlay is complete. Wear is minor: visible seams between the bone pieces, light brown staining around some of the dark areas, a few tiny edge chips, and light scuffs to the interior stain. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The box measures 5.8 x 4.3 x 3.8 inches (L x W x H) and weighs about 1 lb 5.2 oz.
