Overview A handsome pair of vintage handcrafted Indian hardwood keepsake boxes showcasing two distinct traditional woodworking techniques. The larger rectangular box features an intricate, hand-pierced Jali geometric star lattice carved across the entire lid, opening to a clean natural wood interior. The smaller box displays rich relief-carved floral scrollwork with a felt-lined interior. Ideal for storing jewelry, tarot cards, office supplies, or small treasures in Bohemian, Mid-Century Modern, or Global Minimalist decor settings.
Cultural & Artistic Background Handcrafted in Saharanpur, India—a region famous globally for its generations-old woodcarving heritage—this pair highlights the versatility of Indian Sheesham/Rosewood working traditions. The larger box employs Jali (pierced lattice work), an architectural and decorative carving style historically used in Mughal palaces to filter light and air. The smaller box features deep relief carving (Khai Ram) depicting traditional floral vines. The underside of the larger lattice box retains its original foil "MADE IN INDIA" label and a dated inventory tag ("12-98"), providing verifiable late-1990s artisan provenance.
Condition & Surface Character • Solid hardwood construction with smooth, functional brass hinges on both pieces. • Rich auburn and deep espresso grain tones with smooth hand-polished luster. • Larger Jali box lid features intact pierced lattice work and a clean wood interior. • Smaller box displays crisp floral relief carving; interior cobalt blue felt lining shows minor age-appropriate wear along the edges. • Underside of larger box retains original vintage foil maker label and dated paper sticker.
