Overview A fine vintage hand-painted square lacquered serving and catchall tray from India, finished in a classic jet-black ground with intricate gold leaf and paint detailing. Featuring built-in cut-out side handles, the central basin displays a detailed narrative scene filled with traditional domes, layered architectural towers, figures in traditional robes, and lush flowering trees. The inner raised rims are framed by fine-line floral scrollwork, making this piece a functional catchall tray or display accent for Asian Modern, Traditional, or Eclectic interiors.
Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in Northern India's long tradition of lacquerware and miniature painting (Naqashi art traditions), this piece showcases fine freehand linework executed with ultra-fine hair brushes. Artisans apply a smoothed lacquer ground over a light wooden core before brush-painting complex architectural landscapes in metallic gold ink and warm ochre tones. The composition captures the romance of classical Indian palace gardens and village architecture surrounded by stylized botanical motifs.
Condition & Surface Character • Hand-lacquered wooden structure with integrated cut-out handles remains sturdy and intact. • Detailed gold linework across the main basin remains bright, clear, and well-preserved. • Rims and outer edges display fine micro-crazing and light vintage paint rub-wear, giving the piece an authentic antique aesthetic. • Underside retains its original vintage importer/maker sticker ("dGi").
