Overview This pair of vintage hand-painted wooden lacquer boxes displays intricate South Asian court narrative scenes across two substantial rectangular formats. Featuring a vermilion red banquet scene alongside a black-lacquered court audience box, this set adds historic storytelling, rich color, and artisanal character to credenzas, coffee tables, or desk landscapes within Global Eclectic, Boho, and Traditional interiors. Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in traditional miniature painting and lacquer traditions, each container portrays classical royal Darbar (court assembly) scenes. The red rectangular box depicts a seated sovereign hosting a banquet across an ornate patterned carpet adorned with golden vessels, framed by standing guards along the side panels. The black box with rounded corners portrays a formal royal audience, featuring a ruler on a gilded throne receiving advisors and a supplicant, bordered by cypress trees along the lower rim. The base of the black container retains its original vintage paper export label. Condition & Surface Character Both boxes exhibit strong structural stability with cleanly fitted lift-off lids. The high-gloss lacquer finishes show age-appropriate surface character, including fine micro-crazing, minor rim rubbing, and light edge wear consistent with authentic vintage display and use. Interior cavities remain clean and finished in protective black paint.
