Vintage Hand Painted African Calabash Gourd Bowl Carved Folk Art 13"

Cultural & Historical Background
Harvested from the dried shell of the natural calabash fruit, this hand-crafted folk art bowl reflects the vibrant organic craft traditions of African artisan culture. For generations, calabash gourds have been cultivated, hollowed, sun-cured, and transformed into essential domestic vessels, ceremonial containers, and sculptural artworks prized for their natural strength and lightweight form.
This piece features meticulous shallow relief carving paired with striking hand-painted polychrome decoration. Set against a textured cream-white background, the exterior displays a lively palette of cobalt blue, crimson red, sunny yellow, forest green, and orange. The composition blends geometric hourglass panels, sweeping radial arcs, and textured striped bands, all centered around a bold blue circular medallion on the base.
The interior showcases the raw, unpainted texture and warm terracotta-tinted grain of the cured gourd shell, offering an authentic organic contrast to the vivid exterior artwork. Highly versatile in design, this 13-inch vessel functions wonderfully as an elevated table centerpiece dish when upright or as a captivating architectural dome display when inverted on a shelf or pedestal.
Vintage Condition Notes
This piece is in good vintage ethnographic condition. The exterior retains vibrant pigment density with minor age-appropriate paint wear, light surface rub marks, and subtle cracking along the carved relief lines natural to hand-painted organic folk art. The interior shell is structurally sound, clean, and free of cracks.
