Overview This dynamic hand-carved lion sculpture captures the powerful energy of a prowling predator mid-roar. Sculpted from a single block of dense hardwood, the figure features carved mane locks, ribbed muscular flanks, and an open jaw fitted with faux bone teeth accents. Its dramatic low-slung stance and rich dark wood grain make it an eye-catching statement piece for mantel displays, bookshelf arrangements, or executive credenzas in Global Eclectic, Mid-Century Modern, and Safari-inspired interiors. Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in Sub-Saharan African figurative carving traditions, the lion serves as a premier symbol of strength, authority, and regal guardianship. Artisans hand-chisel the form from heavy indigenous hardwood, taking advantage of the natural contrast between the dark heartwood and warm amber sapwood grain. The mouth is detailed with inlaid carved faux bone accents to emphasize the apex predator's expressive, roaring posture. Condition & Surface Character The sculpture maintains solid structural integrity and balanced three-point stability on flat surfaces. The tail has broken off near the base of the hindquarters, leaving a smooth historic break point that blends naturally into the contour of the rump. The polished wood surface retains a lustrous satin finish with natural grain variations, light handling wear, and minor surface marks consistent with age. Faux bone tooth inlays remain firmly intact.
