Overview
A small hand-carved wood Buddha head with closed eyes and a calm, downcast expression. The hair is carved as rows of small drilled curls rising to a tall topknot (ushnisha), the long earlobes are cut open, and the head sits on a round base with a cross-hatched band. Light honey-colored wood. A good size for a shelf, desk, or small altar.
Background
Carved in the style of Indian wood souvenir carvings, often made from light kadam wood. The long earlobes recall the heavy jewelry the prince Siddhartha gave up, and the topknot stands for enlightenment. The exact maker and date are unknown.
Condition
Good vintage condition. No cracks or breaks seen. Light surface wear. Red felt pad on the base. Please see all photos.
