Overview
A vintage Fon bronze ceremonial knife from the Republic of Benin (historic Dahomey), 17 inches long. The handle is cast as a standing female figure with her hands at her chest. She wears a ringed conical headdress with a three-point crest, and has flared ears and lined marks on her cheeks. Below the figure, the round shaft has a rope-twist band and ends in a square collar riveted to the blade. The wide, single-edged blade is pierced with two cross-shaped openings and two slots, and has a curled loop on its back edge. The bronze has a warm golden-brown tone, with darker and greenish patina in the recesses. It makes a strong display piece on a shelf, console or wall.
Background
The Fon of Benin are well known for their cast brass and bronze work, including figures and ceremonial objects like this knife. This piece is unmarked. The handle and the blade are both bronze, joined by a riveted collar, and the knife weighs about 1 lb 8.1 oz. It is a decorative piece, not a working blade. The stand shown in some photos is not included.
Condition
Good vintage condition, and the handle and blade are firmly joined. The blade edges are rough and uneven, with a chipped corner near the tip. There is surface wear and patina throughout, with some green verdigris around the rivets. Please see all photos.
