Overview
A vintage Yoruba carved wood marriage chain, made up of a seated man and woman joined by a long chain of interlocking wooden links. Each figure sits on a small four-legged stool with hands resting on the knees, and each has a tall crest hairstyle that rises into a loop holding the end of the chain. The woman has carved breasts and a calm, smiling face. The man holds a long pipe in his mouth that reaches down to his chest. Both have the bold, wide-open eyes and carved lips typical of Yoruba figure carving. The links lie flat or can be draped, so the piece can be shown spread across a sideboard or shelf, or with the figures seated side by side and the chain looped between them.
Background
Carved wooden chains are a well-known form in Yoruba carving from southwestern Nigeria. Cutting a full chain of loose, moving links from one piece of wood shows the carver's skill, and couples joined by a chain are traditionally seen as a symbol of marriage, unity and a lasting bond, which makes them a popular wedding and anniversary gift. Like most Yoruba carvings, this piece is unmarked and undated. It came from an estate and shows the soft surface wear of an older piece. There are no visible joins or glue in the chain.
Condition
Good vintage condition. All links are intact and move freely, with no breaks or repairs. The wood has a natural light-brown finish with light surface wear and small marks consistent with age. Please see all photos.
