Overview
A vintage electric table lamp by Wilcox, made in silver on pewter and shaped like an old oil lamp. The wide, low font has two scrolled side handles and sits on a short stem and a round stepped foot. A pierced floral gallery holds a frosted glass chimney shade, which gives a soft, warm glow when lit. The front of the font is engraved with an Old English letter "B" monogram. It switches on and off with a pull chain under the font and comes with a flame-tip bulb. It suits a nightstand, desk, mantel or bookshelf.
Background
The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. was founded in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1865 and became part of the International Silver Company in 1898. This lamp is marked on the underside "Silver on Pewter by Wilcox" with the number 0952, and dates to around the mid-20th century. The body is silver plate over pewter, and the lamp weighs about 2 lb.
Condition
Good vintage condition. Tested and working: the lamp lights, as shown in the photos. The silver plate has light scratches, some tarnish and small spots of plating wear, mainly around the rim of the font and the foot. The frosted glass shade shows no chips or cracks. The original brown cord has cracked insulation along its length, so we recommend having the lamp rewired before regular use. Please see all photos.
