Overview

A lot of two original Sunday editions of The Washington Post. The first is Sunday, September 1, 1968, published days after the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, with the front-page headlines "Rumania Citizens in Drills" and "NATO Reviews Defenses," a photograph of a Russian soldier sitting with a Prague student, and a photograph of a protest outside the White House. The second is Sunday, July 4, 1976, the nation's 200th birthday, with the banner headline "America Celebrates Its 200th" above a large photograph of the "All in One" float rolling past the Capitol, and the breaking story "Israelis Liberate Hostages" on the Entebbe raid. The lower half of the 1976 front page has a crowd photograph at the Archives Building, "500,000 Watch Big Parade," a Richard Cohen column and a box announcing the special Bicentennial magazine. Both papers are unframed. They would suit a collection of American or Cold War history, or frame well for a study, office or library wall.

Background

In August 1968, Warsaw Pact forces invaded Czechoslovakia to end the Prague Spring reforms, and this issue (91st Year, No. 271, 30 cents) covers the reaction in Rumania and within NATO. Below the fold are "O'Boyle Personally Suspends Priest," on the birth-control dispute in the Washington archdiocese, "Algeria Frees Israelis and Hijacked Airliner," "More Writers Flee Soviet Occupation," "Four Organs of Woman Transplanted," "FBI Lays Crime Rise to Juveniles," and a notice of new home-delivery prices. The July 4, 1976 issue (99th Year, No. 212, 50 cents) leads with Haynes Johnson's report on the celebrations, while the Entebbe story reports Israeli commandos flying three planes into Uganda to free the hostages held at the airport. These are original period newspapers, not reprints. We have not counted the pages in either paper, so please see the photos for what is included.

Condition

Fair to good vintage condition for newsprint. Both papers have tan toning, darker on the 1968 issue, the original folds, and edge wear with small chips. The 1976 paper has a small tear at the center of the lower edge of the front page, below the Capitol photograph, and the 1968 paper has a small pencil "+4" mark near the top right of the lower front page. Please see all photos.
