Overview
A striking 2-piece studio art pottery service set comprising a tapered lidded sugar vessel and matching creamer pitcher. Hand-thrown on the potter's wheel from dense stoneware, both vessels feature a rich, mottled rust-terracotta iron glaze contrasting against raw, unglazed pedestal bases. The sugar jar is crowned with a fitted notched lid and a sculpted dark manganese finial, creating a warm, organic accent for coffee service or shelf display.
Cultural & Artistic Background
Emerging from the Studio Craft Revival movement of the 1970s, pieces like this set reflect an emphasis on tactile form, earthy glaze chemistry, and visible hand-craftsmanship. The subtle wheel ridges and raw bisque foot highlight the natural material qualities of high-fired stoneware. The underside of each vessel bears an impressed artisan square chop mark featuring the monogram "EM", indicating individual studio provenance.
Condition & Surface Character
• Strong structural integrity and excellent visual appeal across both vessels.
• Rich, mottled satin-matte glaze with natural iron flecking and glaze-runs near the base.
• Note on Condition: The lidded sugar container displays an old, stabilized base hairline repair on the unglazed underside (as pictured). The repair is structurally sound, stable, and completely concealed during upright display, leaving the overall beauty and function unaffected.
Dimensions & Weight
• Lidded Sugar Vessel: 7.0 inches Height x 3.5 inches Base Diameter
• Creamer Pitcher: 6.5 inches Height x 3.0 inches Base Diameter
