Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Canadian steatite sculpting shares a deep lineage with Northern Indigenous material traditions, utilizing natural soapstone quarried from the Appalachian metamorphic belts of Quebec. Born in 1958, sculptor Ross Parkinson began hand-carving in his youth, gaining international acclaim for his wildlife representations—including state presentation pieces gifted to British royalty. Utilizing traditional hand chisels, rasps, and progressive water-sanding methods, Parkinson captures the quiet presence of Canadian fauna. The underside of the base features the hand-incised signature of the artist, authenticating its provenance.
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture exhibits solid structural integrity with a rich hand-polished lustre across the bird's contoured torso and head. The natural mineral composition features striking internal banding and fine quartz-like veins inherent to raw steatite. Minor micro-scuffs and light, age-appropriate wear along the raw, unpolished underside base are present, consistent with vintage stone artwork.
