Overview
A vintage wooden jewelry box from the Philippines in a dark striped hardwood, with black and dark brown streaks running through warm orange-amber grain. The lid has softly rounded edges, and the initials "DJC" are set into one front corner in metal letters. It opens on two brass-tone hinges. Inside is a fitted divider tray lined in orange-gold flocked fabric, with 12 small square compartments, a long compartment across the back and two compartments down the side, for rings, cufflinks, earrings and a watch. It suits a dresser, nightstand or desk.
Background
The wood appears to be kamagong (Philippine ebony), a dense native hardwood with dark, streaked grain that looks much like Macassar ebony. The base is a lighter wood panel framed by a dark border. It has a burned-in mark that appears to read "Philippine Craft" (the second word is faint), with "A 532" above it. The same "Philippine Craft" mark is found on other vintage kamagong wares from the Philippines.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The hinges work and the lining is intact. A small chain lid stay hangs from the lid but is not connected to the box. The lid has light scratches, small white paint specks and a scuffed patch at one corner, the metal initials are lightly tarnished, and the tops of the dividers show wear. The base has light scratches and a few small marks. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The box is 2.2 inches high, 8.8 inches wide and 6.6 inches deep (H x W x D). It weighs about 2 lb 9 oz.
