Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Originating during the post-war golden age of Venetian glassmaking, Murano clowns represent a famous fusion of traditional Italian Commedia dell'arte theatrical clowning with mid-century decorative sculpture. Master glassmakers crafted this figure using complex hot-work (applicato a caldo) and spatter techniques, incorporating colorful glass frits into the body before shaping the oversized bow tie, expressive facial details, yellow hair, and slender walking cane. The black glass shoe base provides a wide, stable foundation, showcasing the technical precision characteristic of 20th-century Venetian furnace art.
Condition & Surface Character
The figurine is in excellent vintage condition with outstanding structural integrity. The hand-blown glass surfaces retain high gloss and clarity throughout, free of chips, cracks, stress fractures, or structural repairs. Minor, age-appropriate shelf wear is limited to smooth contact points on the underside of the black glass foot base.
