Cultural & Historical Background
Crafted in the celebrated lost-wax (cire perdue) metalworking tradition of West Africa, this impressive cast bronze figure draws direct stylistic inspiration from the royal court art of the historic Kingdom of Benin and Lower Niger bronze traditions. Renowned for their master bronze casters, regional artisans created detailed figurative sculptures to adorn royal altars, commemorate lineage, and celebrate military and diplomatic power.
This standing figure portrays a high-ranking court dignitary or warrior chief wearing a distinctive brimmed helmet with perforated lattice work. Suspended across his chest from a beaded collar is a prominent Maltese-style cross pendant—an iconic iconographic motif dating back to 16th-century European diplomatic and trade contact along the West African coast.
The figure wears a wrapped ceremonial kilt (ukpo) densely covered in hand-chiseled geometric scrollwork and cross-hatched patterns. Holding ceremonial daggers or scepters of office in both hands, this 24-inch statue stands as a commanding representation of authority, prestige, and historical regional craftsmanship.
Vintage Condition Notes
This bronze sculpture is in good vintage condition with an authentic, dark aged bronze patina and natural green verdigris highlights in the recessed grooves. Created via traditional lost-wax casting, it displays organic surface variations, pit marks, and a pre-existing opening/break at the top crown of the helmet consistent with hand-poured metal casting and age.
