Overview
A pair of vintage Japanese celluloid treasure ships (takarabune), each with a dragon-head bow and a deck of painted lucky-god figures. The taller ship has a curved sail with a raised phoenix in blue, red, green and white, a flame-shaped jewel finial at the top of the mast, and red lanterns hanging from the yard. Its pale yellow hull is molded with waves and has a red railing with black posts. It carries six figures. The second ship has no sail. Its amber-brown hull has a flowing wave pattern, a red railing and a small gate frame at the stern, and it carries five figures. Both dragon heads have swept-back horns, open jaws and detailed scales, with feathered wings along the bow. They suit a mantel, shelf or curio cabinet, as a pair or apart.
Background
In Japanese folklore, the treasure ship carries the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), who bring good fortune at the New Year. Celluloid treasure ships like these were made in Japan for the export and souvenir trade, mostly from the 1930s to the 1950s. These two are unmarked. The figures are fixed in place. They are light molded celluloid with painted details.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The sail, mast, finial, lanterns and both dragon heads are intact. There are a few small chips and paint flakes, including along the lower edge of the sail, light paint wear on the railings, figures and raised details, and some surface scuffs on the undersides. Please see all photos.

The sailed ship is about 7.8 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches (H x L x D). The open ship is about 3.5 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches (H x L x D). Together they weigh about 8 oz.
