Overview
A vintage Japanese cast iron tetsubin teapot with a red finish over dark iron. The low, rounded body is covered in rows of raised plum blossoms, with the dark iron showing in the recesses around each flower. It has a twisted rope-style overhead handle, a short spout and a red lid with a small bud-shaped knob and a steam hole. It comes with its removable mesh tea strainer. It suits a tea table, kitchen shelf or sideboard.
Background
Cast iron teapots in the tetsubin style are a long-standing Japanese tradition, and plum blossoms are a classic decorative motif. The base is marked with a raised rectangular seal reading 鉄鋳 (cast iron) and a second, smaller rectangular seal. It is solid cast iron and weighs 3 lb 13.1 oz.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no cracks, chips or visible repairs. There is wear to the red finish on the spout, rim, base and raised areas, with some dark spots and surface marks typical of use. The interior is bare iron. The lid fits well and the mesh strainer is included. Please see all photos.
