Overview
A vintage cast iron lidded dish in the shape of an open folding fan. The pierced lid shows irises with sword-shaped leaves, a band of stylized water, and the fan's ribs fanning out from the pivot at the top, with crescent-shaped cutouts that let you see into the dish. The base is a shallow dish with notches cut into its rim and three small feet underneath. The lid is black with gray-green highlights, and the base has a speckled gold-and-black finish. It works as a lidded dish for small things on a desk, dresser or shelf, and it suits a Japanese-themed room.
Background
Decorative cast iron pieces in fan and other traditional shapes were made in Japan in large numbers, and the iris with flowing water is a classic Japanese design motif. Lidded dishes like this one, with vented lids and notched rims, were often used to hold incense or as covered ashtrays. This piece is unmarked apart from a small raised area under the base and a small round mark under the lid, both too worn to read, so the maker and date are not known. It is solid and heavy for its size.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no cracks or visible repairs, and the lid sits on the base as it should. There is wear to the finish, light rust inside the dish and on the underside of the lid, and a small paper store tag tied through the lid. Please see all photos.
