Overview
A vintage Indonesian carved wood mask in a long, slender 40-inch form. The whole front is painted with black ripple lines over a warm honey-colored wood. At the top is a red arched panel with two stylized creatures, with bird-like heads and fish-like bodies, facing a sun disc with a yin-yang at its center. The panel is framed with black-and-white triangle borders, and the white triangles appear to be inlaid shell. Below it is a carved face with heavy-lidded eyes, a notched nose and an open mouth, with smaller painted panels on the cheeks and chin. The back is hollowed and darkened, and it has a hanging cord, so it is ready to hang. It suits a narrow wall, an entryway, a stairwell or a column.
Background
Long carved and painted masks like this are a well-known type of Indonesian decorative carving, often from Lombok and Bali, and they combine local designs with symbols such as the yin-yang. This mask is unsigned and unmarked. It is carved from a single piece of wood, with the eye and mouth openings cut through.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The painted front is clean with no visible cracks. There is a small chip, about half an inch, on the top edge of the back rim, which does not show from the front when the mask is hung. Light wear consistent with age. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
It is 40.2 inches high, 6 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep (H x W x D). It weighs about 4 lb.
