The interior retains significant encrusted red residue (likely dried vermilion/kumkum powder), confirming authentic ritual use. The exterior has a warm, unpolished antique patina.

Description

A beautiful and heavy antique cast bronze (or brass alloy) lidded pot, traditionally used in India to hold sacred powders. Based on the heavy red residue remaining inside, this was almost certainly a Kumkum or Sindoor box, used to store the vermilion powder applied to the forehead during puja or daily rituals.

The container features a classic ribbed or fluted body, resembling a melon or gourd, encircled by rope-work bands. It rests on a raised foot ring. The fitted lid is topped with a distinctive finial composed of three spirals (a trefoil shape), which may serve as a stylized handle. Two small cast loops on the sides suggest it could originally have been suspended or tied to a traveling set.

This is a substantial, tactile piece with genuine age and history, perfect for a collection of Asian ritual bronzes or as a unique trinket box.
