Overview A rare vintage hand-painted papier-mâché cylindrical canister box adorned with detailed figural miniature paintings. The top lid displays a romantic courtly couple seated beneath a garden canopy, while the cylindrical body features a continuous pastoral panorama of figures in traditional robes set amidst cypress groves and domed architectural pavilions. A captivating narrative statement piece for vanity dressing tables, executive desks, or curated shelf displays within Eclectic, Boho, or Global Art interiors.
Cultural & Artistic Background Rooted in the distinguished lacquered papier-mâché art traditions of South Asia, this piece showcases the master craft of naqashi (illuminated miniature surface painting). Molded by hand from layered paper pulp and protected under smooth lacquer, the vessel interprets classical courtly manuscript art, where garden landscapes, pavilions, and leisure scenes symbolise romance, harmony, and architectural grace.
Condition & Surface Character • Structural body is firm and well-preserved with a clean upright drum silhouette. • Hand-painted miniature brushwork remains vivid, featuring rich blue robes, soft green foliage, and warm yellow washes under a protective luster. • Minor, authentic age-appropriate paint flecking along the inner contact lip where the lid rests. • Interior features a smooth pale yellow painted finish, while the underside retains an authentic vintage red foil maker label over dark lacquer. • Smooth lift-off lid functionality.
