Overview
This pair of vintage miniature casket-form trinket boxes features detailed hand-painted courtly genre scenes executed in lacquer and tempera over smooth cream-toned composite panels. Inspired by Near Eastern manuscript illustrations, each dome-topped chest depicts figures gathered in festive courtly assemblies, framed by delicate gold accents. Inside, both boxes feature plush crimson velvet linings, making them ideal ring keepers, pill containers, or curiosity cabinet highlights. This two-piece set includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Rooted in classic Silk Road and Near Eastern miniature painting traditions, these pieces depict a royal majlis—a traditional gathering or banquet featuring music, conversation, and hospitality. The figures are dressed in colorful robes, sashes, and turbans with feathery plumes, seated around bowls and instruments amidst flowering almond and cherry blossom branches. The exterior is protected with a clear high-gloss lacquer finish that preserves the rich gouache pigments, while the brass-pinned hinges reflect mid-to-late 20th-century artisan box-making techniques.
Condition & Surface Character
Both caskets are in sound vintage condition with smooth-operating rear hinges and firm lid closures. The hand-painted figures retain vivid colors with fine, crisp linework. The inner crimson velvet linings remain soft and clean. Minor age-appropriate surface wear is visible on the underside bases.
