Deep Cultural & Historical Background
This dynamic scene draws upon the Sawari (royal procession) genre of South Asian and Mughal miniature art, historically commissioned to record state ceremonies, military parades, and royal victories. At the center of the composition, a ceremonial elephant carries a decorative canopy box (howdah) bearing royal figures, led by foot attendants holding royal banners (alam) and heralds blowing long horn trumpets (karna). Mounted swordsmen riding horses flank the retinue, while stylized grassy tufts anchor the procession within an open landscape. The scene is bordered by a delicate gilded scroll motif (hashiya) executed in gold paint over raised, lacquered wood edges. The reverse side features a smooth black lacquered finish preserving a vintage blue serrated inventory paper label.
Condition & Surface Character
The piece displays honest, age-appropriate vintage character. The raised outer black rim shows authentic edge rubbing and minor paint loss along the corners, exposing the underlying wood substrate beneath. The central painted field remains crisp, colorful, and intact beneath a smooth glossy lacquer protective layer. The structural joinery is firm and flat.
