Overview A vintage hand-carved wooden nutcracker in the form of a standing woman with her hands clasped behind her head. Her hair is parted in the center and falls down her back in finely incised lines. She has calm, downcast features and wears a carved twisted-rope necklace with a round pendant. Her shorts are decorated with incised leaf-shaped patterns. The legs open outward to form the handles, revealing the carved cracking cavity at the hips. The wood has a warm reddish-brown tone with a soft polished finish. It makes a fun conversation piece for a home bar, kitchen shelf or a collection of vintage folk carvings.
Background Figural nutcrackers like this were popular novelty and souvenir pieces in the mid-20th century. Many were carved in the Philippines and Hawaii for the gift trade. This example is unmarked and unsigned. It is carved from solid wood, and the legs pivot on a slotted metal screw set into the lower back.
Condition Good vintage condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. The legs open and close and it works as a nutcracker. There is light wear to the finish consistent with age and use. The black stand shown in the photos is not included. Please see all photos.
