Deep Cultural & Historical Background
This set represents the classical Greek oinochoe (or prochoos), a high-handled wine pouring pitcher essential to ancient Mediterranean symposium rituals. The cream-ground pitcher depicts Aphrodite riding her chariot drawn by winged Erotes (heros), faithfully reproducing a 380 B.C. classical design from the renowned Deepdene collection. Hand-signed on the base by noted artisan studio J. Spyropoulos and individually numbered (13/22), it features rich terracotta glazes and fine linework. The companion black-ground pitcher displays classical Greek figures highlighted with palmette florals and Greek key (meandros) borders, individually hand-signed and numbered in traditional 500 B.C. Attic style.
Condition & Surface Character
Both vessels show good structural integrity with vibrant matte slip glazes and clear hand-written maker inscriptions on their bases. In keeping with age and handling, both spouts exhibit minor chips and older touch-up repairs at their top spout tips. The bodies and handles remain sturdy, displaying light authentic surface patination and wear.
