Overview
A pair of vintage Greek hand-painted copper vessels in the style of ancient Greek pottery: a two-handled vase and a single-handled pitcher. The vase has polished copper bands with a horse-drawn chariot and driver on the shoulder, a stylized bird on the neck, bands of Greek key (meander) and cross-hatched patterns, and black handles painted with white wavy lines. The pitcher has a black ground with two helmeted warriors fighting with spears and round shields on one side and a crouching warrior on the other, framed by red and yellow details and a Greek key band, with a fluted neck, a gold-tone interior and a tall curved copper handle. They display well together on a shelf, mantel or console.
Background
Painted copper vases and pitchers based on ancient Greek vase painting were widely made in Greece for decorative and souvenir use in the later 20th century. The pitcher's base has a stamped "HAND MADE IN GREECE" mark with a triangle logo and a hand-written number (No 307). The vase's base has a small oval stamp and the marking "Λ 5."
Condition
Good vintage condition with wear. The pitcher has a minor dent in the metal near the foot on the front. The vase's handles have small paint chips, the vase's base shows oxidation and corrosion around the edge, and both pieces have light surface wear. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The vase is 10.8 inches tall and the pitcher is 8.5 inches tall.
