Overview
This impressive 11-inch vintage Greek ceramic wall plaque features a dramatic three-dimensional high-relief rendering of Heracles engaged in combat with the triple-bodied giant Geryon. Hand-painted by renowned Greek artisan J. Spyropoulos, the central heroic figure is depicted wearing the lion-skin mantle while confronting armed warriors against a deep matte black ground, framed by a classic white meander (Greek Key) border. Designed for prominent wall display, this signed relief plate brings classical myth and museum-grade artistry into home libraries, entryways, or curated gallery walls. Every order includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping securely packaged for safe transit.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
This piece illustrates one of the legendary Twelve Labors of Heracles—his Tenth Labor to capture the cattle of Geryon, a formidable giant of the far western Mediterranean. Rendered in the dramatic narrative style of Attic black- and red-figure pottery from circa 500 BCE, Heracles is identifiable by his lion-pelt armor (nebris) and formidable stance, drawing his bow against the heavily armored hoplite bodies of Geryon fitted with crested helmets, spears, and detailed round shields. Produced in Greece during the mid-to-late 20th century studio pottery movement, the reverse bears hand-lettered documentation and artisan signing: "518/26. Heracles and Gideonis [Geryon]. 500 B.C. Hand painted and made in Greece. J. Spyropoulos", establishing verified studio craftsmanship.
Condition & Surface Character
The plaque is in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting crisp, intact high-relief detail across all raised figures, armor plates, and facial features. The hand-applied pigments remain vibrant with rich contrast between the terracotta-red, buff-yellow, and bronze-toned enamels. The reverse features a smooth black-glazed backing with its original wire hanging loop anchored securely through ceramic lugs. Free of structural cracks, chips, or restorations.
