Overview
This exceptional set of four vintage Dutch silverplated spoons, complete with their original manufacturer presentation boxes, represents a captivating cross-section of mid-century Netherlands silversmithing. Crafted by the renowned manufactory Gero, the collection features two historic birth commemoratives celebrating the Royal House of Orange-Nassau and two traditional Oud-Hollandsch folk design spoons. Preserved with their period cardboard boxes labeled Gedenklepeltje (commemorative spoon) and Oud-Hollandsch, this complete set offers a refined display accent for a dining sideboard, curio cabinet, or shadowbox wall presentation. Every order includes complimentary, fully insured standard shipping.
Deep Cultural & Historical Background
Produced by Gero in Zeist, Netherlands—a factory celebrated since 1912 for high-quality electroplated tableware and decorative flatware—this collection spans two historic themes:
Princess Beatrix Birth Spoon (1938): Commemorating the birth of Princess Beatrix on January 31, 1938 (31 Jan '38), this spoon features a crowned medallion with a sculpted portrait of the royal infant with outstretched arms, resting above a stylized royal monogram.
Princess Irene Birth Spoon (1939): Celebrating the birth of Princess Irene on August 5, 1939 (5/8 1939), this piece showcases a crowned oval finial depicting the young princess in a lace collar, framed by delicate scrollwork. The reverse upper stem is stamped with the manufacturer hallmark "GERO 90".
The Dutch Milkmaid Spoon (Melkmeisje): Set atop a spiraled, twisted stem, the finial features a detailed relief figure of a traditional Dutch milkmaid dressed in regional folk attire, holding a shoulder yoke with two milk buckets.
The Dutch Windmill Spoon (Molen): Also featuring a twisted stem motif, this spoon is topped with a architectural 3D depiction of a classic Dutch windmill, symbolizing rural Netherlands heritage.
Condition & Surface Character
All four spoons are in excellent vintage condition with strong structural integrity. The silverplated surfaces exhibit age-appropriate tarnish, soft metallic luster, and mild natural oxidation that highlights the crisp depth of the die-stamped relief work. The original presentation boxes show gentle edge wear, light toning, and vintage patina consistent with carefully stored mid-20th-century paper ephemera, adding authentic historic charm.
