Overview
A vintage silverplate covered entree dish by F.B. Rogers, in two pieces: an oval base and a domed lid. The base has a wide, shaped rim with a scalloped outline edged in several fine reeded lines. The lid follows the same shaped outline, with a raised panel on top and a sturdy cast loop handle set on a shaped plinth. The design is plain and classic, with the reeded edges as the main decoration. It suits a holiday table, buffet or sideboard, for vegetables, sides or rolls, and the base also works on its own as a serving platter.
Background
Covered entree dishes in the English Sheffield style were a popular part of American silverplate table service through the mid-20th century. The underside of the base is stamped with a crown above "Sheffield Silver on Nickel F B R 2 3", the FBR mark of F.B. Rogers. The two pieces weigh 2 lb 11.3 oz together.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no visible dents or repairs. There are light surface scratches, most visible on the underside of the base, and a few small spots on the lid near the rim. The lid fits well. Please see all photos.
