Overview

A vintage silverplate silent butler by English Silver Mfg. Corp. It has a round pan with a domed, hinged lid, a cast scroll-and-shell lift on the lid, and a turned red-brown wood side handle. The lid is engraved with a winged horse (Pegasus) hanging from a sign bracket on a striped post, like an old inn or shop sign. The finish is the original silverplate with an even tarnish. A silent butler was used to clear crumbs from the table between courses. Today it also works as a lidded catchall for a dresser, desk, bar cart or coffee table.

Background

Silent butlers were a common table item in American homes from the 1940s to the 1960s, used by hosts to clear crumbs and ash discreetly between courses. English Silver Mfg. Corp. was an American maker of silverplated tableware, and this piece is likely mid-20th century. The underside is marked with a profile bust, a shield with "f M&R S", "ENGLISH SILVER MFG. CORP.", model number "80" and "MADE IN U.S.A."

Condition

Good vintage condition. The original silverplate finish is intact with no plating loss, and there are no significant dents. There is tarnish throughout, with speckled spotting on the domed lid and light surface scratches from use; the inside of the pan is clean. The hinge works and the lid closes fully, and the wood handle is tight with no cracks. It has not been polished. Please see all photos.
