Overview
A vintage Egyptian sterling silver pendant set with a carved scarab beetle. The cream-colored scarab is carved with a fan of rays at the head, a line across the shoulders and a center line down the wing cases, with angled lines at the sides for the legs. It sits in a smooth oval silver frame, with a row of five small round beads along the top; two of the beads have a gold tone. The silver has a darker patina in the recesses, which sets off the carving. It hangs from a tapered silver bail and suits a chain or a cord.
Background
The scarab beetle was a symbol of the rising sun and renewal in ancient Egypt, and scarab jewelry has been made in Egypt for visitors and collectors for many years. The back of this pendant is stamped "EGYPT 925", which means it was made in Egypt in sterling silver. The material of the carved scarab has not been tested. This piece came from an estate auction.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no significant damage. The scarab is secure in its setting. The silver has tarnish and light surface scratches, mostly on the back. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
It is 1.5 inches high including the bail and 1.2 inches wide (H x W). It weighs about 0.6 oz.
