Overview
A large vintage silver-on-copper butler serving tray by Crescent. The wide rim is cast with clusters of grapes and grape leaves, and the same grapevine design continues onto the two open handles. The flat center is engraved with scrolling leaves, flowers and crosshatched panels around a plain center reserve. Much of the silver has worn away, so the warm copper shows through across the center and floor, giving the tray a two-tone look. It sits on four small feet. Use it for serving drinks or food, on a bar cart or sideboard, or as a display tray on an ottoman or console.
Background
Silver-on-copper trays with grapevine borders were popular for entertaining in the mid-20th century. The underside is stamped "Crescent Silver on Copper" with decorative marks of a lion over a C shield, a griffin over a striped shield and a crown with plumes, along with the number 5292.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no dents. Both handles and all four feet are in place. The silver plating is heavily worn in the center and across the floor, showing the copper beneath. There is a pale whitish residue in the grapevine rim, likely from old polish, and the underside is tarnished and stained, with light scratches. Please see all photos.
