Overview
A small vintage Chinese silvered metal ewer, or wine pot, decorated with a dragon among clouds. The dragon is raised in relief on the round body, with scaled detail and a small pearl, set against stippled cloud bands. The neck has an engraved panel border and a rope-edged flared rim, and the foot has a wave border. A tall curved spout and a scrolled S-shaped handle complete the form. The silver tone has darkened in the recesses, with warmer metal showing on the high points. It suits a shelf, desk, curio cabinet or tray display.
Background
Dragon-and-cloud decoration is one of the most common themes in Chinese decorative metalwork, and small ewers like this were made as display pieces. This piece is unmarked. It is a silvered copper alloy with hand-chased relief, open at the top with no lid, and it has a hollow foot.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or visible repairs. There is tarnish and darkening throughout, wear to the silvering on the raised areas, and green oxidation inside the neck, rim and foot. The spout tip has a slightly uneven, worn edge. The lower end of the handle curls outward as part of the design. Please see all photos.
