Deep Cultural & Historical Background
In mid-20th-century decorative art traditions, spelter (a zinc-based white metal alloy, historically referred to as régule) was widely utilized by fine art metal Founders to achieve complex, highly detailed sculptural castings with lighter weight profiles than heavy bronze or copper. This avian figure was mold-cast and hand-finished, featuring chiseled feather textures along the wings and a ribbed neck collar. Across worldwide folk art and decorative iconography, the dove and pigeon represent domestic harmony, peace, fidelity, and spiritual messages, making bird figures a timeless motif in decorative bronzed metalwork.
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture is in solid structural condition with normal age-appropriate surface character. The exterior exhibits a hand-applied dark bronze patination accented by subtle oxidized green verdigris tones settling into the recessed feather detailing. Minor handling wear and small scuffs along high-relief points and the underside of the claw feet reveal the lighter grey core metal beneath, highlighting its authentic vintage casting composition.
