Overview
A pair of vintage bronzed baby shoes, each mounted on a green banded onyx base. The shoes are small lace-up high-tops with tied laces, perforated toe caps, and the creases, stitching and eyelets of the original shoes still visible under the metal finish. The copper-tone finish is bright on the raised areas and darker in the creases and inside the shoes, which shows off the detail. The pale green onyx bases have rust and caramel colored veining and polished tops. The pair suits a bookshelf, desk, mantel or nursery shelf, and the stone bases give them good weight.
Background
Bronzing a baby's first shoes was a popular keepsake tradition in the United States through the mid-20th century. The real shoes were coated with metal and were often mounted on bases as bookends, picture frames or desk pieces. No maker's mark is visible on this pair. The shoes are fixed to the bases, and the pair weighs 3 lb 11.6 oz.
Condition
Good vintage condition. One base has a chipped corner, and there are small chips along the edges of both bases. The shoes show darker toning in the creases and inside, with light wear to the finish on the high points. Please see all photos.
