Overview
A set of three vintage brass trivets: one Thomas Jefferson cipher trivet and a pair of square trivets with Chinese-style engraved borders. The cipher trivet is an openwork casting of Jefferson's interlaced "TJ" monogram, with large scrolled loops and a lattice center, and it stands on four short peg feet. The two square trivets each have a pierced central motif in the form of a stylized Chinese character, framed by flat borders engraved with flowers and leaves, and each stands on four ball feet. The cipher trivet has a bright golden tone, and the square pair has a darker aged patina on the engraved side. They work as teapot or pot stands, or as small display pieces on a shelf, sideboard, mantel or wall.
Background
Brass cipher trivets based on historic monograms became popular colonial-revival keepsakes in the mid-20th century and were sold through historic sites such as Monticello. The underside of this one is cast THOMAS JEFFERSON CIPHER, MONTICELLO and TJMF COPYRIGHT 1951, with a small maker's mark. The square trivets are made from flat brass plate with engraved borders and attached ball feet, and they are unmarked.
Condition
Good vintage condition with no breaks or visible repairs, and all feet are in place. The square pair shows surface wear, darkened patina and small green spots near the feet and in the engraving. The cipher trivet has light scratches, a few spots of red residue on the front and a small pink sticker mark on the underside. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The cipher trivet measures about 6.2 x 5.5 inches (W x D) and stands 0.7 inch high on its feet. Each square trivet measures about 5.2 x 5.2 inches (W x D) and stands 0.7 inch high. The three together weigh about 1 lb 14 oz.
