Overview
A vintage Balinese medicine flask hand carved from black water buffalo horn, with a figural stopper. On top of the stopper, a crouching monkey figure with a human face grips a coiled naga serpent, carved in openwork so you can see through the figure. The collar of the stopper is set with three inlaid bone roundels with orange centers, above a finely notched rim. The front of the body shows a tree of life with a bird and fruiting branches rising from a flowering lotus base, set inside a pointed panel and framed by deep spiral scrollwork. The sides have diamond panels with rosettes. A cord runs through small carved lugs on the stopper and body and down through the pierced foot. The horn has a deep black, glossy finish. It suits a desk, shelf or curio cabinet.
Background
On Bali and neighboring Lombok, small carved horn flasks like this were used to hold medicines, powders and betel ingredients, and they were often topped with figural stoppers. The deep spiral scrollwork and floral base are typical of Balinese carving. This piece dates to the mid-20th century and comes from an estate. The stopper fits into an oval opening at the top, and the cord is a later replacement.

Good vintage condition with no significant damage. There is light handling wear, fine surface scratches and some wear at the foot rim. Please see all photos.
