Description
A powerful miniature wooden statuette originating from the Ngbandi or neighboring Ngbaka peoples of the Northern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite its small scale, this figure commands attention with its intense expression and evidence of ritual use.
The figure features a large, dome-shaped head with a distinctive small, hook-shaped nose, eyes set widely apart, and an open mouth—classic stylistic elements of the Ubangi region. The body is carved in a squat posture with legs bent at the knees; the arms hang to the sides with hands extending forward to touch the stomach. The surface is covered in a heavily encrusted patina, suggesting repeated libations or ritual applications.
Cultural Context: In the traditions of this region (particularly the Ngbaka), such figures often relate to the supreme deity Gale (or Gbonboso). Mythology tells of two messengers, Seto and Nabo (sister and brother), who are recognized as the primordial ancestors. Carved images like this are traditionally placed upon the twabozo (family altar). Here, they are protected from misfortune and offered respect. In return, it is believed they protect the owner’s family from hardship and possess the ability to cure illnesses. They are often associated with divination practices used to reveal the causes of misfortune.
Key features:
Classic Ubangi Style: Dome-shaped head and concave face with hook nose.
Ritual Surface: Heavily encrusted, thick patina indicating active use on a family altar (twabozo).
Ancestral Form: Represents the primordial messengers (Seto/Nabo) used for protection and healing.
Compact Stance: Squat, bent-knee posture with hands focusing energy on the abdomen.
Gallery Mounted: Presented on a custom-made stand for immediate display.
