Overview
An antique Victorian silver plated ice water pitcher by E.G. Webster & Bro. of Brooklyn, New York. It has a rounded, pear-shaped body on a stepped round foot, with a hinged domed lid and a small cast finial. The spout is cast as an eagle's head, and the handle is cast with flowers and leaves. Both sides of the body are engraved with roses, leaves and a cross-hatched center motif. Inside, a curved ice guard holds back ice when pouring. It suits a sideboard, dining table or bar cart.
Background
Double-walled ice water pitchers were popular American tableware in the later 19th century, made to keep water cold at the table. The E.G. Webster & Bro. mark was used in Brooklyn from the 1860s to the mid-1880s. The underside is stamped "E.G. Webster & Bro." and "Triple Plate," with the number "15" and some scratched marks. There is a small hole in the center of the base, which is typical of double-walled ice pitchers. It is a heavy piece at 4 lb 13 oz.
Condition
Good antique condition with no dents, breaks or repairs. The plating is in good order, with surface scratches, light wear and areas of tarnish, mainly on the body and lower band. The hinge works well and the interior is clean. Please see all photos.
