Overview

A lot of two original Pittsburgh Press newspapers, 18 years apart. The first is the Friday, May 6, 1960 Final edition, with a banner headline on President Eisenhower's doubts about his planned trip to the Soviet Union, next to "'If I Go,' He Says In Casual Talk" and "U.S. Plane Downed By Rocket On Order Of Khrushchev." Below it are "Faint 'I Will' Weds Meg, Tony," with a photograph of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones on their wedding day, "29 Killed, 250 Hurt In Tornados," and an editorial, "To Our Readers," marking the Press becoming the city's only afternoon daily. The second is the Monday, June 12, 1978 Final Home edition, with "Son Of Sam Gets 25 Years To Life," "Peking 'Pushing U.S. To War,' Taiwan Warns," "DA Backs Move Of Hawkins Trial," "Top Court Halts Media Breakup," and a photograph of Anita Bryant signing autographs in Atlanta. Both papers are unframed. They would suit a collection of Cold War, true crime or Pittsburgh history, or frame well for a study, office or library wall.

Background

On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union, days before a planned summit, and on May 6 Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, married Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey. The 1960 issue (Vol. 76, No. 316, 5 cents) also carries "Firestone Heir Falls To Death," "Rockefeller Plans For 'Drive' Reported" and "Margaret Keeps Her Royal Rights." David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam" killer who terrorized New York City in 1976 and 1977, was sentenced on June 12, 1978. The 1978 issue (Vol. 94, No. 349, 20 cents) carries the UPI report on the sentencing, and its back page carries "Mars Plane May Be In NASA's Future," "Discord With Dayan Threatens Begin Rule" and "Quake Kills 19, Injures Many In North Japan." These are original period newspapers, not reprints. We have not counted the pages in either paper, so please see the photos for what is included.

Condition

Fair to good vintage condition for newsprint. Both papers have even tan toning, the original folds and light edge wear. The back page of the 1978 paper has a large tear with some paper loss along its right edge. Both are shown in clear plastic sleeves. Please see all photos.
