Cultural & Historical Background
Hand-tooled leatherworking (repujado en cuero) holds a vibrant place in Andean folk art traditions, combining centuries-old South American iconography with Spanish colonial leathercraft techniques. Master leather artisans select thick vegetable-tanned hides, using specialized swivel knives, chisels, and embossing irons to carve detailed narrative scenes that celebrate indigenous wildlife, historical legends, and rural daily life.
This exquisite shoulder satchel showcases complex multi-layered leatherwork. The asymmetrical front flap features intricate floral cut-out filigree laid over a vivid red felt background, encircling a raised central medallion carved with a pack llama among cacti, beneath a radiant sun motif. The reverse side depicts a traditional Andean chasqui (Inca messenger runner) traversing a desert landscape framed by cacti and an Incan trapezoidal stone doorway. Every edge is bound with hand-braided leather whipstitching.
Unlatching the turn-lock clasp reveals a thoughtful functional design: two exterior snap-closure pockets with individual hand-carved relief scenes, along with a main zippered compartment lined in cloth. Complete with its original leather shoulder strap, this purse serves as both a wearable piece of ethnographic art and a durable vintage accessory.
Vintage Condition Notes
Preserved in excellent vintage condition with rich age-appropriate character. The vegetable-tanned leather has developed a warm, golden-amber patina with soft surface scuffs, light edge rubbing, and gentle creasing consistent with authentic mid-century leathercraft. The red felt underlay remains vibrant and clean. The metal turn-lock clasp, zippers, and internal pocket snaps operate smoothly.
