Overview
A two-paper lot from The New York Times. The main piece is the Sunday, August 25, 1991 Late Edition (Vol. CXL, No. 48,703), with the banner headline "Gorbachev Quits as Party Head; Ends Communism's 74-Year Reign." The front page carries a large photo of Mikhail Gorbachev at the funeral of three men killed in the coup attempt, an excerpt from his resignation statement, and reports by Bill Keller, Serge Schmemann and Francis X. Clines. The second piece is an inner section from Wednesday, April 30, 1975, led by a full-page tribute to Duke Ellington with photos of trumpeter Jon Faddis and the crowd at the 24-hour birthday marathon. The newsprint has an even, warm tone, and the headlines and photos print dark and clear. Both papers would frame well for an office, study or library wall.
Background
The August 25, 1991 issue was published days after the failed August coup, when Gorbachev stepped down as head of the Communist Party and the party's leadership was told to disband. Its inside pages include more coverage of the Soviet events, a story on Iowa pig farming by Peter T. Kilborn, and a full-page Polo by Ralph Lauren ad for The Men's Store at Bloomingdale's. The 1975 section includes John S. Wilson's report on the Ellington marathon at the Central Church on Park Avenue, a story on Ash Can School paintings at City Hall, a News Summary and Index page that records the surrender of Saigon, and a full-page People magazine ad featuring Karl Lagerfeld. Please note the 1975 piece is an inner section and does not include that day's front page.
Condition
Both papers are in good vintage condition, with even age toning, normal fold lines and light edge wear. The 1975 section has a few small punctures and nicks along the top edge, and the 1991 paper has small nicks along the bottom edge of its back page. The text and photos remain clear and readable throughout. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
Each paper measures about 22.5 x 15 inches (H x W) as folded. The lot is lightweight.
