Lulua African Carved Wood Female Statue Red Scarification Figure 20" Congo

Overview
A finely hand-carved ethnographic sculpture depicting a standing female figure in the traditional Bena Lulua artistic canon of Central Africa. Featuring high-relief body scarification, a pointed conical coiffure, and rich red ochre pigment accents in the incised grooves, this 20-inch wooden sculpture offers a commanding presence. Ideal as a focal point for global eclectic, Wabi-Sabi, or Japandi interiors, it pairs effortlessly with credenza centerpieces, mantel displays, or architectural shelf niches.
Cultural & Artistic Background
Originating from the Kasai River region in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bena Lulua figurative sculpture is celebrated for its elaborate body ornamentation and symbolic scarification (kikasa). In Lulua cultural tradition, scarification patterns and concentric circular designs around the navel signify lineage continuity, beauty, and the cycle of life (tshibola). The tall, textured coiffure with geometric grid carving highlights noble status and spiritual refinement. Hand-carved from a single block of native hardwood, the figure displays red ochre pigment rubbed into the incised chevron and diamond motifs along the torso, back, and face, preserving regional ceremonial craft traditions.
Condition & Surface Character
The sculpture demonstrates structural integrity with solid wood density throughout. Surface character displays natural aging, with subtle surface grain variations and a gentle vertical age line along the rear spine that remains tight and stable. The red ochre pigment retains strong visual definition within the incised scarification channels, complemented by a warm honey-brown wood patina. The figure is securely mounted on an ebonized rectangular wood display block for stability.
