Overview
A framed Chinese paper cut from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in its original red presentation box. The red paper cut forms the character 福 (fu, good fortune) out of carp and flower sprays, set on a printed card titled 中國剪紙 "Paper cut in China". The card also carries a short note in Chinese and English on the history of paper cutting, a small red seal, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences name in Chinese and English. It sits in a red textured mat inside a black frame with a gold-tone outer edge and a beaded inner strip, with an easel back for standing on a desk or shelf. The red cloth-covered box opens like a book, is lined in white satin-style fabric, and has the Academy's emblem and name in gold foil on the lid.
Background
Paper cutting (jianzhi) is a traditional Chinese folk art, and the fu character is a popular good-luck design, often hung at New Year. Fish are a common symbol of abundance because the word for fish sounds like the word for surplus. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is China's national academy for the natural sciences, and this piece carries the Academy's name on both the card and the box.
Condition
Good condition. The frame and paper cut are clean and intact. The box lining is clean. The red box lid has pale faded patches at one top corner and along the front edge. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The frame is 8.4 inches high, 7 inches wide and 0.8 inch deep (H x W x D). It weighs about 1 lb 3 oz.
