Overview
An antique Victorian syrup pitcher with a white ceramic body and pewter mounts. The body tapers from a wide lower section up to the shoulder and is circled by a pewter band at the middle. The pewter top has a beaded collar, a shallow rim and a raised round pouring spout cut at an angle. The tall pewter handle has a ball finial at the top and joins the body with a round mount. The white glaze is smooth and the pewter has a soft gray patina. It suits a farmhouse shelf, a coffee bar or a kitchen display, and it also works as a small vase.
Background
Syrup pitchers with pewter tops were common on American and English tables in the late 1800s, used for syrup, molasses or cream. This one is unmarked. The body is ceramic, not enamel on metal, and the top, band and handle are pewter. It weighs 1 lb 0.4 oz.
Condition
Fair antique condition. The hinged pewter lid is missing, and the hinge tab at the back of the rim is broken. There is a chip with dark discoloration on the lower body, light wear to the glaze, and wear to the pewter. The foot rim has an orange-brown edge. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
It measures 6.5 x 4 x 3.5 inches (H x W x D), with the width taken from the spout to the handle. It weighs 1 lb 0.4 oz (about 465 g).
