Overview
An antique Victorian figural girandole candlestick with a courting couple. A gentleman in Renaissance-style dress, with a plumed hat, short cape, doublet and hose, leans toward a lady in a long, full gown with lace at the collar. Above them, a slim stem with a scrolled bow rises to a candle cup with a leaf-cast rim. Around the cup is a pierced ring of leaves and grape clusters, with small holes where crystal prisms once hung. The figures stand on a stepped white marble base with a cast metal band of leaf-and-tongue molding between the two tiers. It suits a fireplace mantel, console table or bookshelf, or can be paired with a similar piece.
Background
Girandole candlesticks, made to hang glass prisms that caught the candlelight, were popular mantel decorations in the mid-19th century, and courting couples in historical dress were a common design. This piece is unmarked. The figural front is cast with an open back, and it is held to the marble base by a rod with a square nut underneath.
Condition
Fair to good antique condition. It is very stable and nothing is loose. The upper marble block has a hairline crack running through it, but it is solid. The prisms are missing, and the prism ring may be slightly out of round. The gilt is worn on the high points, there is green corrosion inside the candle cup, and the nut under the base shows rust. The marble is yellowed in places, with small chips at the edges. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The candlestick measures 15 x 5.3 x 3.7 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 4 lb 1.9 oz.
