Overview
An antique Victorian powder flask made of embossed copper with a brass top. The front shows the classic shell and bush pattern: a ribbed fan shell at the center with scrolling leaves curving out to each side, and leafy scrolls rising up the neck. Just below the brass top is a band of diamond lattice with small raised dots. The brass top has a sprung thumb lever and an adjustable charger nozzle with graduated slots for setting the measure. The copper has a warm amber patina with green verdigris in the recesses, and the brass has a mellow aged tone. It suits a bookshelf, desk, mantel or curiosity cabinet.
Background
Embossed copper powder flasks with sprung brass tops were standard gear for shooters using muzzleloading guns through much of the 19th century, and the shell and bush pattern was one of the most widely made designs. This flask is stamped "PATENT" on the brass top and has no maker's name. It is made from two embossed copper halves joined at the edges, with two small hanging rings on the sides for a cord.
Condition
Good antique condition. The thumb lever has spring tension and both hanging rings are intact. There is general wear to the brass top and nozzle, light scratches and handling marks, and verdigris in the low areas. It is sold empty, as a display piece. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & Weight
The flask is 8.0 x 3.0 x 1.5 inches (H x W x D) and weighs about 6.3 oz.
