Overview
An antique Victorian silver plated open sugar bowl by the Barbour Silver Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. The round, low body rises to a flared rim and stands on four cast scroll feet. Both sides are chased and engraved with scrolling leaves and flowers framing a blank cartouche, left open for a monogram. Two tall cast handles curve up from the body, each with a twisted rope top and leaf mounts where they meet the bowl. The silver has a soft, warm tarnish with golden and violet tones that show off the decoration. It suits a tea service, a sideboard or a display shelf, and also works as a small planter or catch-all.
Background
Open sugar bowls with two handles were a standard part of American silver plated tea services in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Barbour Silver Co. made silver plated hollowware in Hartford from the 1890s and later became part of the International Silver Co. The base is stamped with the round Barbour Silver Co. Quadruple mark and the pattern number 1006. The body is silver plated over a white metal base, with cast handles and feet, and it weighs 14.3 oz.
Condition
Good antique condition with no significant dents, breaks or repairs. There is overall tarnish and surface wear, with golden and coppery tones on the underside and parts of the body that may be tarnish or light wear to the plating. The interior has darker patina and some spotting. Please see all photos.
